Stem Cell Research Living Will

Sat May 28, 2005 at 04:01:09 PM PDT

Crooksandliars
has posted this pledge for all the wingnuts to take. Jesus General says: "That god-fearing patriot from Crooks and Liars has come up with a living will for stem cell research. I hope it catches on. Greater love hath no man than he lay down the life of his family for that of a gooey collection of protoplasm.

The Culture of Life Pledge

I hereby certify that neither I, nor any member of my family, including but not limited to: children, grandchildren, cats, dogs, etc. and any "after acquired" family will never, ever, under any circumstances (even with my fingers crossed) take or ingest any form of drug treatment or medical breakthroughs that are in any way associated with or connected to Stem Cell research. I am morally opposed to this type of medical malfeasance that our lord and Savior and Dr. Dobson most assuredly rebuke. I declare that I am of sound mind and body (as so it is hence with respect to the aforementioned family members) as we execute this irrevocable document and thusly said, this document shall not be challenged in a court of law. This is so despite the fact that I or said parties, would either now or in the future, be the beneficial recipient of such a repugnant life enhancing treatment . Only the Devil's greatest tool, i.e. "temptation" could lead us into sinful thoughts of partaking of this reprehensible policy.

As Amanda form Pandagon points out: This seems to me to be a perfect compromise position--if you think stem cell research is wrong, you are perfectly welcome never to use the results of such research. I even suggest that the FDA mandate labeling any drugs or treatments that come out of this research with a big red sticker, so that no fundies accidentally partake of any life-saving treatments that come from this research...

those of us who support stem-cell research should have a similar statement, one to the effect of:

Being of sound mind, body, and spirit, I hereby certify and authorize forthwith any doctor or medical practitioner to offer to me and grant permission to use any medical breakthrough that has been in any way associated with or brought forth because of Stem Cell research.  I am morally opposed to any wingnuts, fascists, or anti-science creationists who believe such treatment to be tampering with the Man's Grand Plan, and support without possibility of revocation unless by court-recognized document that you bet your fucking ass I would want Stem Cell research treatment should it be available to me or my known cause of illness or malady.  As a member in good standing of the reality-based community, please let it also be said that, should I burn in hell, hades, or any other potentially fictional reality, it was my choice--in other words, if Randall Terry or James Dobson tries to get involved in any court proceeding hereof, and I am unable to speak or am verbally incapacitated, will someone out there please, for the love of God, tell  Mssrs. Terry and Dobson to "Go fuck themselves."
